Find the Right Personal Injury Attorney

How to Find the Personal Injury Attorney That’s Right for You

Nobody ever starts their day excited to go shopping for a personal injury attorney. Lawyers are kind of like surgeons, nobody is ever excited to go out and hire one, but they’re just as necessary. Unlike surgeons, who you may talk to once, and spend most of your time together unconscious, lawyers can be right or wrong for you. Finding an attorney that is just right for you and your situation can be a time-consuming process, especially if you have special needs and circumstances that go along with your case.

If you have been injured in an accident, you may need to have a lawyer that can travel to you if you are hospitalized. Or, if you have been disabled, you will need your attorney to really go the extra mile to communicate with you if you have sensory damage, or brain injury.

A good personal injury attorney will be sensitive to any and all special needs their client will have. However, as just like any profession, injury lawyers can sometimes become desensitized to the physical and emotional trauma that their clients have suffered through. While this doesn’t mean that they won’t be able to do their job and do it well, often clients who have been injured sometimes just need a sympathetic ear, or a shoulder to cry on.

So how do you know for sure if the injury attorney you are in a consultation with is going to be the right one for you? Unfortunately, just giving a few signs to look for won’t be enough. We need to discuss the types of special needs an injured client can have, then address they ways a good attorney can work with them to create a relationship of attorney/client trust.

            Injuries that Require Special Needs

Even a simple broken leg can cause someone to have needs that a good lawyer will have to meet. For instance, a personal injury lawyer that does not have an office that is wheelchair accessible is already failing. Often, no matter what kind of injures sustained, there will be some mental and emotional trauma stemming from the accident.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). TBI’s are a very common type of injury that occurs in automobile accidents. A TBI is a form of injury that affects the brain when there is a very sudden trauma to the skull and head. TBI’s can happen when something strikes the skull, or if the skull is penetrated and the brain tissue is damaged.

The severity of a TBI can be mild to severe, depending on the amount of damage to the brain tissue. A person that has only suffered from a mild case of TBI, may not have even suffered from a loss of consciousness, with symptoms ranging from a mild headache, light headedness, and a ringing in the ears. A severe TBI can cause mood changes, blurred vision, trouble with memory and concentration, slurred speech, and an inability to awaken from sleep and even death.

            Spinal Cord Injuries and Paralysis

A spinal cord injury (SCI), occurs when the grouping of cells and nerves that sends and receives signals from the brain to the body is damaged. This grouping of cells and nerves is called the spinal cord, which runs from the lower part of the brain at the base of the skull to the lower back.

The severity of loss of function in the body has to do with the location of the injury on the spinal cord. The loss of nerve function occurs below the injury to the spinal cord. If the injury occurs low in the spine near the waist, then there will only be a loss of function to the legs, a condition known as paraplegia. If the damage to the spinal cord occurs higher, like near the neck, then someone will experience the loss of function to all of the limbs of the body. This condition is called quadriplegia.

            Fractures and Broken Bones

While it may not seem like it, fracturing or breaking bones in a car accident or other traumatic incident can sometimes be the best-case scenario. If the fracture is a clean break, a cast and some time will normally heal the break so that eventually you will be back to 100%.

A compound fracture, or an “open fracture,” is when the broken bones penetrates the skin and creates an open wound.  These types of breaks are much more serious, due to the possibility of bacteria, dirt and other contaminants causing an infection.

Whiplash and Neck Injuries

Whiplash is a very common injury to the neck that happens when someone is rear-ended in a car crash. It is caused by a forceful and rapid, back and forth movement of the neck, like like cracking a whip. The majority of the time, people who suffer from whiplash will fully recover within a few weeks. However, whiplash can create chronic issues and complications that do not go away. Whiplash is one of the most common injuries that will normally require the services of a personal injury attorney, due to the possibility of long-term complications.

The most common symptoms of whiplash include neck pain and stiffness, difficulty moving the neck without pain, headaches that normally start at the base of the skull, fatigue, dizziness and a tingling or numbness in the arms. More serious symptoms are blurred vision, ringing in the ears, memory problems and difficulty concentrating.

After experiencing whiplash, it is important that you consult a doctor immediately to rule out more serious issues like a fractured neck, or a traumatic brain injury.

How a Good Personal Injury Attorney Will Cater to You Needs

The most important thing to focus on after an injury causing accident is healing and your family. The last thing you want to be doing is worrying about whether or not you are going to be compensated for your injuries and your pain and suffering. Hiring an experienced personal injury lawyer, like the team of attorneys at Justice Law Center, can take a lot of weight off of your shoulders. However, hiring the wrong lawyer can just make the stress even worse.

If you are disabled and recently released from the hospital, a good injury lawyer will normally try to come to you for an initial consultation. Many will even come to the hospital as soon as you are feeling up to talking with them. If you are in a wheelchair and are still heavily medicated and a lawyer asks you to travel to their office for a consultation, chances are that lawyer isn’t going to be sympathetic to other needs you may have.

If you have suffered from a TMI, or other injury that will cause communication to be difficult, you will need a personal injury lawyer that will have the patience to take the time to let you do you best to communicate. This communication is vital to a personal injury case and if you can’t concentrate, you will need a lawyer who is willing to take the time to make sure that the lines of communication are clear.
